Importing a car from Denmark to Sweden: guide for private buyers

Yes, as a private individual resident in Sweden, you can buy a car in Denmark for your own use and register it here. Before payment, you must determine its VAT treatment, secure the original documents and choose lawful, insured transport. An advertisement or a registry result alone is not enough.

Do not make the final payment until the VIN, the seller’s authority, the purchase document, registration certificate, encumbrances, VAT treatment and handover plan all match.

Determine the VAT treatment before committing to the purchase

For VAT purposes, the car is new if it is delivered within six months of first use or if it has been driven no more than 6,000 km before delivery. It is enough for one condition to be met. It is used for VAT purposes only if it is delivered more than six months after first registration and has been driven more than 6,000 km. Both conditions must be met. 1 2

If the car is new and you are a private buyer not registered for VAT who will use it in Sweden, you submit form SKV 5282 and declare and pay Swedish VAT no later than 35 days after purchase. The Swedish Tax Agency states 25%. The basis includes the invoice price, supplied accessories and associated freight or handling. Amounts are converted to SEK under the delivery-day rule, or the invoice-day alternative when invoicing is close to delivery. 1

If the car meets both used-vehicle thresholds, you do not pay Swedish VAT merely because you bring an EU-registered car into Sweden. A private seller does not charge VAT. A car dealer’s invoice may show VAT separately or follow another VAT arrangement; check the invoice and the seller’s VAT treatment instead of interpreting the advertisement or a missing VAT line. No customs duty is charged within the EU. 1 2

Document the first registration, delivery date and verified odometer reading. If anything is unclear, VAT remains a cost to be determined.

Check the car, seller and originals before payment

Match the car’s VIN against both parts of the registration certificate, the purchase document, inspection history and relevant supporting documents. Check the seller’s identity or authority to sign for the company, as well as the payment recipient. For Swedish verification of origin, the purchase document must state the seller, buyer, what was sold, sale date and VIN or other vehicle-specific identity. 5

Search for the car in Bilbogen using the VIN. The register shows registered mortgages and retention-of-title arrangements, but is not an ownership register. An empty result proves neither ownership nor a complete history. Reconcile the VIN, seller, agreement and registration certificate, and require a written resolution of an encumbrance. 3 4

The Danish registration certificate consists of parts 1 and 2 and is used for re-registration; an original is required by the number-plate operator. It shows the primary owner and user, but a secondary owner or user may be omitted. Secure the originals and do not assume that no other rights holder exists. When driving abroad, part 1, or the Danish Motor Vehicle Agency’s official part-1 copy, must accompany the vehicle. 4

For a car previously permanently registered, verification of origin must include the foreign registration certificate in original form and all parts issued. For a new WVTA car without previous permanent registration, an original CoC is required instead. Do not substitute a scan or invoice for the required original document. 5

An independent pre-purchase condition inspection assesses condition, but is not the Swedish Transport Agency’s verification of origin, registration inspection or any periodic roadworthiness test. Review the service and damage records that the seller actually provides; no complete Danish history is verified here.

Settle export and refund matters in the agreement

Denmark’s possible refund of part of the original registration tax is the exporter’s conditional process. The process includes an extended inspection at the right time, a valuation request, return of plates, and proof of ownership, sale and export. It is not an automatic buyer entitlement or discount. Agree the final price, applicant, control of the process and recipient of any refund. 9

Evidence of actual export may be foreign registration, a CMR consignment note or an export declaration. Export must be documented no later than three months after the valuation request. The declaration “Export and acknowledgement of receipt of motor vehicle” is only supplementary evidence that the car has been exported from Denmark. A Bilbogen encumbrance causes the application to be rejected as long as it remains. 3 9

Tie the handover to the car, keys, agreed originals and final-payment receipt. Keep the seller’s refund separate from your Swedish registration.

Choose lawful and insured transport

Choose and price one main option. A Danish temporary sticker plate for self-driving is valid only for the named person and for no more than seven days. The official page states that third-party liability insurance is included and permits travel from Denmark to or through Germany. You must still check every other country. Confirm the plate and insurance for the correct driver, dates, whole route to Sweden and any ferry. Choose vehicle transport if this cannot be substantiated. 6

The Swedish one-week rule does not prove that the plate is valid on the journey here. After permanent entry, the car may be driven without Swedish temporary registration for no more than one week, only if the foreign registration permits unrestricted use and valid insurance covers the driving. A legible prescribed registration document must be carried. 7

After the week, or immediately if the registration is not valid, the car may not be used without temporary registration or a confirmation of a booked inspection. The confirmation permits only the shortest suitable journey to and from the inspection; otherwise, a trailer is required. 7

Follow the Swedish registration process

Once the car has arrived in Sweden, the intended registered owner applies for verification of origin. It is the first registration step and the fee is SEK 1,240. If ownership changes before entry in the Swedish Road Traffic Register, the verification ceases to be valid; the new owner must apply with a purchase document. 8 5

Only after approved verification of origin may you book a registration inspection or individual approval. The inspection company checks technical identity, environmental and road-safety requirements, and registered vehicle data. Additional technical documents may be required. 8

An approved mandatory periodic roadworthiness test from an EU or EEA country may, under certain conditions, be credited at the registration inspection. This is not automatic and does not replace the registration inspection. Take the report with you and ask whether the car requires a periodic roadworthiness test in Sweden. 8 5

Swedish temporary registration is requested with verification of origin, lasts three months and cannot be extended. Unrestricted use requires entry from the EEA and foreign registration that permitted unrestricted use in Denmark. With a 30-day insurance certificate, the car is uninsured on day 31 unless replacement Swedish insurance is in place. Compulsory motor third-party liability insurance must cover all use. 7

After approved registration inspection or individual approval, the car is entered in the Swedish Road Traffic Register and receives a registration number. The Swedish Transport Agency sends the certificate and plates only to the owner’s registered address in Sweden. A vehicle requiring insurance needs Swedish compulsory motor third-party liability insurance before activation for road use; tax-payment information follows activation. 8
