Yes, as a private individual resident in Sweden, you can buy a car in Czechia for your own use and register it here. Czechia is in the EU, so you pay no customs duty for the movement itself to Sweden. However, the car's age and mileage determine whether Swedish VAT must be paid. The most important practical question is not only whether the car appears good value, but whether, before payment, you can secure the right original documents, establish the seller's right to sell and arrange lawful transport all the way. 1 2
Therefore, make the purchase conditional on a document and vehicle inspection. Then choose either a fully verified arrangement for driving it yourself or transport with a carrier. Never assume that a Czech export plate automatically applies in every country along the way. After arrival, the Swedish registration process begins with verification of origin.
Start with the right decision
| Question | Decision | Consequence |
|---|---|---|
| New for VAT purposes? | Check time and mileage | New at no more than six months or 6,000 km; used only once both thresholds have been exceeded 1, 2 |
| Which original is required? | Previously permanently registered car: every certificate part in original. New WVTA car never permanently registered: original CoC | The wrong route can stop verification of origin 3 |
| Drive or transport? | Drive only with a verified plate and insurance all the way | Otherwise choose a carrier 4, 5 |
| Role of the pre-purchase inspection? | The car's condition before the transaction | Not a Swedish registration decision 6 |
A pre-purchase inspection answers questions about the car's actual condition at the time of inspection. It replaces neither the Swedish Transport Agency's verification of origin, registration inspection nor any periodic roadworthiness test. Keep these steps separate in the agreement, timetable and budget.
Check the car and documents before payment
Match the car's physical VIN against the registration certificate, purchase document, inspection history and all other relevant evidence. The name of the registered owner must match the seller. If someone else handles the export matter, the owner's written power of attorney is required. A low price or a statement in an advert is never a substitute for this chain. 4 5
Request a signed purchase agreement or invoice that states the seller, buyer, what has been sold, date of sale and the car through its VIN or other vehicle-specific identity. At the same time, take possession of the original documents. For a car previously permanently registered in an EU country, Swedish verification of origin requires the original registration certificate and every part issued. For a new WVTA-approved vehicle that has never been permanently registered, the applicable route is instead an original Certificate of Conformity. 3
Also check the odometer history through the official Czech Kontrola tachometru service. It shows readings recorded at vehicle and emissions inspections. Read the sequence chronologically and compare it with the service book, garage invoices and current odometer reading. The service does not certify the true total mileage, ownership or mechanical condition. 7
When applying for a Czech export plate, the registered owner or a representative with written power of attorney acts. The supporting documents comprise identity documentation, the registration certificate, a technical passport if one has actually been issued, and all registration plates. The authority also checks that there is a valid evidentiary vehicle inspection. Therefore, do not require an older technical passport if the car has never been issued one. 4
Arrange the export and choose transport
The Czech authority describes two administrative routes when exporting to another EU country: applying for a time-limited export plate at any ORP, or registration in the receiving country, after which the foreign authority notifies Czechia within two months. The latter is an administrative deregistration route, not permission to drive an unregistered or uninsured car. 4
| Alternative | Choose when | Check before booking |
|---|---|---|
| Drive it yourself | The entire driving chain can be established | Expiry date, recognition in every transit country and insurance territory 4, 5 |
| Carrier | The driving chain is unclear or the car is not to be driven | Quote, responsibility, insurance, loading requirements and delivery location 5 |
| In Sweden | After the first week or with invalid foreign registration | Temporary registration, inspection certificate or trailer 8 |
The official information says that the export plate is time-limited but gives no universal period of validity. Therefore, read the expiry date in the particular documents issued and allow a margin for collection. Before driving it yourself, you must also check that the type of plate is recognised and that the insurance applies in every country on the actual route and for the travel dates. If the whole chain cannot be confirmed, a carrier is the safe alternative. 4 5
Request written insurance confirmation specifying the vehicle, driver, territories and validity dates. For carriage, the quote should instead specify the collection location, delivery location, condition suitable for loading, insurance responsibility and which fees are included. These transport alternatives should be compared, not added together as though both were needed.
Driving in Sweden after arrival
A car imported permanently may be driven without Swedish temporary registration for no more than one week from entry, and only if its foreign registration is valid for unrestricted use and valid insurance covers the driving. The driver must carry a readable registration certificate. Therefore, retain evidence of the arrival date; one week is a limit, not an automatic right to drive. 8
Once the week has passed, or if the foreign registration is not valid, the car may not be used in Sweden without temporary registration. A certificate of a booked inspection permits only the shortest appropriate journey to and from the inspection. For every other movement, a trailer or transport is required. 8
Swedish temporary registration for import is requested together with verification of origin, is valid for three months and cannot be extended. For a car from Czechia, it can allow normal, unrestricted use only if the car has been brought here from the EEA and the foreign registration allows unrestricted use in the country of origin. Compulsory motor third-party liability insurance must be valid throughout the period of use. If you use the permitted 30-day insurance certificate, the car is uninsured from day 31 unless you arrange new Swedish insurance. 8
VAT: new or used under EU rules
VAT classification has a strict double threshold. The car is new if it is delivered within six months of first use or if, before delivery, it has travelled no more than 6,000 km. It is used in this VAT category only if it is delivered more than six months after first registration and has travelled more than 6,000 km. If only one of the used-vehicle conditions is met, the car is therefore still new for VAT purposes. 1 2
As a private buyer resident in Sweden who is not VAT-registered, for a new means of transport you must submit form SKV 5282 and declare and pay Swedish VAT no later than 35 days after the purchase. The tax rate is 25%. The taxable amount comprises the invoice price, supplied extras and related freight or handling. Amounts are converted into kronor under the Swedish Tax Agency's rule for the delivery date, or the invoice-date alternative when invoicing is close to delivery. 1
An EU-registered car that meets both used-vehicle thresholds does not, however, trigger Swedish acquisition VAT simply because you bring it to Sweden. A private seller does not charge VAT. A dealer may show VAT separately or use different VAT treatment, so check the invoice and the seller's status rather than drawing conclusions from the advert or a missing VAT line. 1 2
Register the car in Sweden
Once the car has arrived in Sweden, the person who is to be the Swedish registered owner applies for verification of origin. This is the first registration step and the published fee is SEK 1,240. If the car changes owner before it has been entered in the Swedish road traffic register, the approved verification of origin ceases to be valid; the new owner must apply and attach their purchase document. 6 3
Only after approved verification of origin can you book a registration inspection or, where the vehicle-specific route requires it, individual approval at an inspection company. There, technical identity, environmental and road-safety requirements are checked, and the data to be entered in the Swedish road traffic register are established. Modifications, approval status and documentation may result in a requirement for additional technical documents. 6
A mandatory road-safety test that the car has passed in an EU or EEA country may, in qualifying cases, be taken into account when the car is presented for registration inspection. This is not automatic and does not replace registration inspection. Bring the inspection report and ask the Swedish inspection company whether the car also needs a periodic roadworthiness test in Sweden. 6 3
After a passed registration inspection or individual approval, the inspection company registers the car in the Swedish road traffic register and a registration number is allocated. The Swedish Transport Agency sends the registration certificate and plates only to the owner's registered address in Sweden. If the car is subject to compulsory motor third-party liability insurance, valid Swedish compulsory motor third-party liability insurance must be in place before you activate it for road use. Information about vehicle tax follows after activation. 6
Prepare a complete but conditional budget
| Item | Amount | Condition |
|---|---|---|
| Purchase price | To be determined | Agreed price and payment currency 4, 5 |
| Currency exchange | To be determined | Rate, surcharge and transfer fee |
| Pre-purchase inspection | Request a quote | Optional; carried out before final payment 7 |
| Czech export plate | To be determined | Only for approved self-driving 4 |
| Foreign insurance | Request a quote | For self-driving; must cover the route and dates 5 |
| Fuel or charging | To be determined | Self-driving; depends on the car and route |
| Road tolls | To be determined | Self-driving; check the route 5 |
| Ferry | Request a quote | If the chosen driving route uses a ferry |
| Car transport | Request a quote | Alternative to self-driving; not added together with it 5 |
| Swedish VAT | To be determined | Only if the car is new under the EU thresholds; 25% of the invoice price, extras and related freight or handling 1 |
| Verification of origin | SEK 1,240 | Swedish Transport Agency's published application fee 6, 3 |
| Registration inspection or individual approval | Request a quote | The route and document requirements are vehicle-specific 6 |
| Possible periodic roadworthiness test | Request a quote | Show the foreign report; ask whether the car also needs a periodic roadworthiness test in Sweden 6, 3 |
| Swedish plates | To be determined | The amount has not been verified 6 |
| Swedish compulsory motor third-party liability insurance | Request a quote | Required before activation for road use where insurance is compulsory 6, 8 |
| Repairs and servicing | To be determined | Determined after the condition inspection 7 |
| Tyres | To be determined | Check condition, dimensions and need |
| Vehicle tax | To be determined | Vehicle details and activation for road use determine the amount 6 |
| Contingency | To be determined | Set once condition, transport and registration route are known |
Do not add together driving it yourself and carriage, and include Swedish VAT only when the car is new under the specific EU definition. Since almost all commercial amounts are vehicle- or supplier-specific, a total is misleading before you have quotes. You may wish to add your own contingency after the condition inspection has shown which repairs and tyres are actually needed.

Frequently asked questions
Do I need to pay customs duty when the car comes from Czechia?
No, not for movement within the EU. The VAT question is separate: a car that is new under the EU age or mileage threshold may result in Swedish VAT. 1, 2
Is the car used for VAT if it is older than six months?
Not automatically. It must have been delivered more than six months after first registration and travelled more than 6,000 km. If only one condition is met, it is treated as new. 1, 2
Can I always drive the car home on Czech export plates?
No. No universal period of validity or validity for the entire route is confirmed. Check the issued expiry date, recognition of the plate and insurance in every country; otherwise choose a carrier. 4, 5
May I drive the car in Sweden during the first week?
Only with foreign registration for unrestricted use and valid insurance. Carry a readable registration certificate. After that, temporary registration, a limited inspection certificate or a trailer is required. 8
Does a Czech inspection replace Swedish registration inspection?
No. A qualifying passed test from the EU or EEA may be taken into account, but it does not replace registration inspection. Show the report and ask whether the car also needs a periodic roadworthiness test in Sweden. 6, 3
What happens if the car changes owner during the Swedish process?
If ownership changes before the car is entered in the Swedish road traffic register, verification of origin ceases to be valid. The new intended owner must apply again with their purchase document. 6, 3
Would you like the car inspected before purchase?
CarAudit's public information states coverage in Czechia through Carvago Deutschland GmbH. Ask about the specific car, location and preferred date. The list is no guarantee: the seller must grant access and capacity must be available. Request confirmed availability and price before basing the purchase on the inspection. 9, 10
